Today the 15th Aug 2007 India is celebrating its 60 years of independence. It is higly significant cause I think it is the first country to preserve democracy beyond argument inspite of its poverty, massive illiteracy and diversity. Also as Mukul kesavan quotes “India’s Republican democracy is premised on a national myth of pluralism, not the standard nationalist invocation of a shared history, a single language and an assimilationist culture”
The complete credit goes to our first prime minsiter Jawarharlal Nehru for instilling, promoting, preserving and perpetuating democracy. Of course, the true champions and beneficiaries of Indian democracy are its people. They have elected leaders into power and booted them out whenever they didn’t like them, making this a vibrant democracy.
